My First 5K (and not my last)

A few posts ago, I mentioned my goal list and what I planned to accomplish by the end of this year. By yesterday, I only had one item left on my list; The Terry Fox Run.
The Terry Fox Run means a lot to my family and me. It shows that with determination, one person CAN change the world. Since 1 in 4 people will get cancer in their lifetime, everyone will be affected by this disease either someone they know, or themselves. To date over 600 million dollars has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name!  My family and I did the 5k today for the first time ever. We did it for my Dad, my husband's Mom and my sister-in-law, all cancer survivors. We go every year (for the above reasons), but generally only do two or three kilometers, partly because of laziness on my part and partly because of whiny kids on their feet/bikes/in strollers…. Not today I am proud to say! All four of us completed the entire route. My son on his bike and the rest of us on foot. My run jog attempt was ok, but not an entire run. I had planned to be training for this for the last seven weeks, but after the first week there was a sick week, three really busy weeks with way more classes to teach, a few weeks of more excuses and I never did get my training completed. Today I jogged/walked the 5k using my anniversary gift from this year. I didn’t go below 70% of my maximum heart rate and got it up to 90% during my jog times according to my new heart rate monitor watch. Even though I did finish what I had intended to, I wasn’t happy with my attempt. So, I am going to do the same route in a month from now. I intend to shave at least 5 minutes off my time of 46 ½ minutes and jog more of it. My daughter has agreed to join me (seeing as she doesn’t have soccer or harrier anymore!) and is going to train also. Her longest run before this was 2k, so she did well today too.

I said that I would be posting weekly weigh-ins and I didn’t forget. On Friday when I got on the scale, it was the same as the last week. But this time I HAD been trying. Many months this year, I have not been surprised at the outcome, as only my exercise had changed not the quantities I eat, but I really tried last week. Clearly my calories need to be reduced again. I am trying to cut calories by just a little to ensure I have the energy to do my classes and my other new workouts. So this week, I am going to play with the calorie intake again. Don’t worry friends; I haven’t forgotten that I will beat you in our weight loss competition, if only to be able to gloat about it! But I also want a new outfit and to be 15 pounds closer to my goal.

Does anyone want to join me in a month on a beautiful fall run by the lake? I run slow…
